Jan Frait

After graduating from the Faculty of Economics at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava, Jan Frait received the Young Economist of the Year Award from the Czech Economic Society for his work Portfolio Model of the Balance of Payments (and its Application to the Czech Republic in 1992–1995).

Since 1990, he has also pursued an academic career at the Faculty of Economics of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava. He became an Associate Professor in 1998 and was appointed Professor of Economics in 2002.

In 2000, he was appointed a member of the Bank Board of the Czech National Bank by the President of the Czech Republic. After completing his term in 2006, he remained at the CNB, first as an adviser to the Bank Board and later as Deputy Director of the Economic Research Department, responsible for financial stability analysis. In 2010, he became Director of the Financial Stability Department and, in 2018, Executive Director of the Financial Stability Department. In these roles, he also represented the CNB, among others, on the European Central Bank's Banking Supervision Committee.

From 1999 to 2007, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the Czech Economic Society and served as its President from 2001 to 2004. He has also been a long-standing member of the Editorial Board of "Finance a úvěr" – Czech Journal of Economics and Finance.

His main areas of expertise include macroeconomics, financial stability, monetary theory, and the international financial system. He has published extensively on these topics in Czech and international academic journals.

He has been a member of the Bank Board of the Czech National Bank since 1 July 2022 and has served as Vice-Governor of the CNB since 13 February 2023.
